About the Artist

Artist. Painting. Science. Geek.

Why do I paint? There is something inside me that sees these landscapes of the geology and my local coast and I want to capture them.

In my abstract landscapes, science and geological patterns are quietly immersed in colour. Juxtaposed with my glazes of soft atmospheric paint layers, I use drawing or collage to draft half-obscured strata of rock and cliff. I lay hints of the deeper time in our surroundings. My take on a traditional landscape brings together art and science, entwines ideas from the sublime artworks of 18th century exploration and the new sublime of modern science. Whether rover landscapes on Mars or the 100 million year-old cliffs surrounding Yorkshire, I want to share a curiosity about time, land, and space within an aesthetically beautiful space.

Artist biography

I was born in 1970 in Chicago. I grew up equally fascinated by math, art, science, writing, and music. An endless academic, I moved to Scotland in 1993 to pursue a second degree. Later moved to London, where I finally took up art and painting, and then to Yorkshire. I earned my British citizenship in 2012. Years living next to Lake Michigan, the River Tay, the Thames River, and the North Sea surfaces in my abstractions of water and the sea. In 2005 I began cycling and painting the English coastline, which prompted a return to university in 2010 for a sixth degree. For that I studied the coastal geology that is now a vital element of my artwork. Most recently I finished a masters degree in space science and technology, focusing my projects on Mars sedimentary geology. This appeared in my paintings, too!

For over 20 years, my artwork has combined elements of abstraction with the science of my materials and subject matter. My drawings and paintings are collected internationally, and I work from my studio in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.
